Why Wig Styling Matters
A well-styled wig can elevate a simple costume into something truly recognisable. Conversely, a flat, unstyled wig fresh out of the packaging can undermine even the most beautifully crafted outfit. The good news is that basic wig styling doesn't require professional skills — just a little patience and the right tools.
What You'll Need
- A wig head and stand — essential for hands-free styling
- Wide-tooth comb and fine-tooth comb
- Heat-resistant wig (if you plan to use heat tools)
- Low-heat curling iron or flat iron (for heat-resistant fibres only)
- Got2b Glued spray or similar — the cosplayer's go-to for holding spikes and dramatic shapes
- Sharp scissors for trimming and shaping
- Bobby pins and wig clips
Before You Style: Detangle First
Always start with a freshly detangled wig. Work from the tips upward using a wide-tooth comb, never yanking from the root. This prevents fibre breakage and makes styling far easier. A light mist of silicone-based detangling spray can help with particularly stubborn tangles.
Creating Spikes and Gravity-Defying Shapes
Many anime characters have highly stylised hair that defies physics. Here's how to achieve those dramatic spikes:
- Section the wig into the spike clusters you need
- Apply Got2b Glued spray generously to each section
- Use your fingers to shape the spike, then hold it in place or prop it against something as it dries
- Once dry, reinforce with another light layer of spray
- For extra-large spikes, add a wire armature inside the wig fibre before styling
Adding Curls and Waves
Only attempt heat styling on wigs labelled as heat-resistant. Use the lowest heat setting that gets results — usually around 120–140°C. Synthetic fibres melt easily, and overheated sections cannot be repaired. Always do a test curl on a hidden part of the wig first.
For a no-heat alternative, braid damp wig fibres and leave overnight for natural-looking waves.
Trimming and Shaping
Most cosplay wigs benefit from a trim. Uneven lengths, overly thick fringes, and bulky silhouettes can all be fixed with scissors. Cut conservatively — you can always take more off, but you can't add it back. Use thinning shears to reduce bulk without losing length.
Securing the Wig
A wig that shifts or falls off mid-con is a nightmare. Use these methods to keep yours secure:
- Always wear a wig cap in a matching colour
- Use bobby pins through the wig cap into your natural hair
- Add wig clips (combs) sewn inside the wig cap for extra grip
- For very long or heavy wigs, consider a wig grip headband underneath
Practice Makes Perfect
Give yourself plenty of time before the convention to experiment. Wig styling is a skill that improves dramatically with practice, and even a basic wig can look incredible with the right shaping and finishing.
